It is said that the Wandjina spirit figure is the embodiment of the rain spirit and ancestor of the Wunambal people. Found in the plateau areas along the North Kimberley coast, and hinterland, painted on rocks and the walls of caves by long gone artisans, they are always pictured from a frontal aspect with no mouths, and large blacks eyes and a slit or beak-like nose, with the veil of dots suggesting raindrops. Dreamtime mythology has it that the Wandjina emerged from the clouds, and will return in that manner, while other versions suggest that Dumbi, the Owl, is the model
