STORY
Angelina George was born near Nutwood Downs Station on 25 November 1937. She grew up at the Roper River Mission, where her mother worked, and she attended school alongside her sisters. She recalls her mischievous childhood, escaping school to fish in the river, and her fondness for the natural world became a lifelong connection.
Belonging to the freshwater Ngyameratjara people, Angelina’s deep relationship with the landscape profoundly influences her art, which captures rivers, billabongs, and bush flora with a unique sense of place. Her work explores the contours and moods of the land, often rendered in aerial perspectives that evoke the spirit of the country rather than direct representation.
Fire, a powerful motif for Angelina, burns through her paintings, revealing the bare bones of the landscape, reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic scene. As she reflects on her practice, she connects her art to memories of walking the land with her family, feeling both nostalgia and sadness for the past. Her landscapes are not merely visual recreations; they are deeply contemplative meditations on place, memory, and ancestral stories.
